Trade cards used imagery and gimmicks to promote
By Melody Amsel-Arieli Trade cards first appeared in 17th-century Europe. They were small, sturdy pieces of paper advertising the wares of tradesmen. At the advent of chromolithography over a century later, their texts were embellished with eye-catching multi-color images. Though trade cards were found in America after the Civil War, they gained widespread popularity following the 1867 Philadelphia Centennial.
