In the 1950s and ‘60s, westerns rode rough shod over television. According to Wikipedia, there were 86 western television shows in the 1950s alone. Bonanza, which aired from September 1959 to January 1973 was the second longest running television western. During its 14-year run, Bonanza was the first hour-long network television series filmed in color.
